NEM 2015 – THE MARKET THAT PUSHED THE CEE REGION UNDER GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT

Ten panel discussions, four coffee breaks, two sunny happy hours, two unforgettable evening parties, one exclusive announcement, over 700 participants, three days – one NEM.

This is a brief overview of this year’s New Europe Market, NEM 2015, which drew a huge media interest and delighted each and every participant.

The ten panels at NEM 2015 saw discussions on the newest and the most important trends in the media industry, and the influential professionals from all over the world and the biggest media companies aroused interest with new information and interesting discussions. Some of the subjects were: how to find a new successful TV format, how new technologies affect the television industry, the influence of satellite technology on the OTT market, how did the economic crisis affect the biggest media companies and purchasing of various rights, how does advertising work in today’s media market and how is it influenced by the increasing number of new platforms. The world’s top producers shared their experiences.

The panel A Match Made in Co-production Heaven brought together Tom Fontana (creator of Oz and The Borgias), Bonita Pietila (producer of The Simpsons), Nigel McCrery (creator of Silent Witness) and Peter Nadermann (producer of Millennium series). What was considered by most the most interesting panel drew a huge interest among the participants who enjoyed the 20-minute Q&A with the producers at the end of the panel. We found out that Tom Fontana killed “more characters than the Game of Thrones series”, Bonita Pietila revealed that Moe in The Simpsons wasn’t played by Hank Azaria in the beginning of the show, a fact not known by many, and that during production, Peter Nadermann gives a lot of attention to dubbing of his series to the original language. The discussion was moderated by Ankica Jurić Tilić, a producer and founder of Kinorama. The discussion was opened with the trailer for Ms. Tilić’s new film, which recently won an award at the Cannes film festival High Sun.

One of the highlights of NEM 2015 was also the appearance of Tim Daly, the TV star we currently see in CBS’ hit-show Madam Secretary. While in Croatia, Daly saw the walls of Dubrovnik, but also enjoyed the sea, and during the interview on NEM’s stage he did not hide his delight with what he had seen. In a pleasant interview with Antonija Mandić, Tim shared his stories about climbing the Kilimanjaro, and how it is to grow up in a family where everybody is in the movie industry. He also revealed that the secret to his youngish look are kale and sex.

NEM’s importance was also confirmed by Fremantle. The company chose the convention to announce the project with a huge meaning and potential for our region. Fremantle and Jadran Film announced their strategic partnership exclusively at NEM 2015. They will bring to the screen the works of the most popular female writer in the region – Marija Jurić Zagorka.

But despite all of the events at this year’s NEM, the thing we are proud of the most are the business connections that the participants established. The goal of New Europe Market has been from the beginning to connect people from all over the world with professionals in the region, in order to emphasize its huge potential. The biggest success of NEM 2015 are undoubtedly new business deals made at numerous networking places, the new acquaintances that were formed, and the expansion of the circle of people who attend NEM, and who will, after this year’s success, undoubtedly return in increasing numbers.
